Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground mild Italian sausage
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon parsley
1 Egg, beaten
3/4 cup Italian bread crumbs
2 slices white bread, crumbled
1 tablespoon milk
8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese, reserve 3/4 cup for topping
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup marinara sauce, plus 1/2 -3/4 cup more for topping
How to make Italian Meatloaf
Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the onion and bell pepper to the skillet and saute for about 3 to 4 minutes. When done, remove from heat.
Step 2: Place the meats, onion, and peppers along with all remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Remember to save 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese for later.
Step 3: Using your hands, combine the ingredients. In your preferred baking dish, place and shape the mixture.
Step 4: On top, spoon 1/2 to 3/4 cup marinara sauce and spread. Place in a preheated 400 degrees oven and bake for about 50 minutes. Top the meatloaf with the rest of the cheese, then sprinkle with a bit of dry basil. Bake for another 10 minutes until the meat is no longer pink. Note that the baking time varies depending on how thick your loaf is.
