2 cups sugar, white
1/3 cup baking cocoa
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups water
3/4 cup I use vegetable oil or coconut oil (updated from original)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract, I use pure and a tad less on measure
2 teaspoons vinegar
CHOCOLATE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:
1 pkg cream cheese, softened (8 ounces)
1/4 cup butter, you can use margarine in a pinch but I use butter
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup bakers cocoa (I love Hershey’s but use what you like)
dash(es) salt
3 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
How to make Grandma Homemade Chocolate Cake
Step 1: Combine the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking soda, and salt) in a mixing bowl. Pour in the water followed by the oil, vanilla, and vinegar. Mix well until you have a thin batter.
Step 2: Into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inches pan or two 9-inch round cake pans pour the batter. Place in a 350 degrees oven and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from the oven once done and let the cake cool completely.
Step 3: To make the frosting, mix well the cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl until creamy. Add in the cocoa, salt, vanilla, and milk, then stir until creamy.
Step 4: Frost the cooled cake. Serve and enjoy!
NOTE:
I find mixing a melted butter to the wet ingredients fantastic. Simply add the melted butter to the bowl along with the wet ingredients before mixing.
