INGREDIENTS
1 3/4 c. buttermilk
4 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
HOW TO MAKE TRADITIONAL IRISH SODA BREAD
Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 425 degrees. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and flour.
Step 2: Place the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Mix well, then slowly whisk in the buttermilk until you have a slightly sticky dough.
Step 3: Onto a floured surface, turn the dough, and gently knead a couple of times. Shape the dough into a ball. Into the prepared pan, press the dough into a large disk. Make sure that the dough reaches the edges of the pan.
Step 4: Using a sharp knife, slice an “X” on top of the dough, around 1/4 inch deep.
Step 5: Using another round cake pan, cover the pan with the dough and turn the pan upside down. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, covered. Then, take the top pan off and continue baking for additional 10 minutes or until the crust is dark golden brown.
