THE PERFECT HOMEMADE MEAT SAUCE

by Rebecca March 7, 2022

Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 2 hrs | Total time: 2 hrs 10 mins | Yield: 16-18 SERVINGS

If you are looking for the best homemade meat sauce, then you are in the right place. This is the perfect, super meaty, thick, and hearty meat sauce perfect to use for lasagna, spaghetti, and more! This meat sauce uses a combination of lean ground beef and Italian sausage for the ultimate flavour. If you do not want to use sausage, you are welcome to use 1 pound of ground beef, ground turkey, or ground chicken instead. Freeze the sauce for later use. Just thaw it before using it and reheat it on the stovetop.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb Italian sausage, removed from their casings (I used Hot Italian Sausage)

1 and ½ lbs lean ground beef

2 tbsp olive oil

5 garlic cloves, finely minced

1 large white onion, finely diced

3 c. (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes

1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste

2 c. (16 oz.) tomato sauce

2 tbsp brown sugar

½ tsp ground black pepper

2 tsp dried basil

½ tsp fennel seeds

¼-1/2 tsp crushed red peppers flakes (optional)

1-2 tsp salt, to taste

2 tsp Italian Seasoning

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT HOMEMADE MEAT SAUCE

Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a large dutch oven over medium heat, add the diced onion and minced garlic to the hot oil and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, tossing around using a wooden spoon until the onions have softened and translucent.

Step 2: To the cooked onions, add the Italian sausage and ground beef. Continue to cook, breaking the meat apart as it cooks using a wooden spoon until no longer pink.

Step 3: Drain the excess grease when done. Then, pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add a bit of water to the jars, slightly shake, and add to the pot.

Step 4: To the pot, add the tomato paste along with the sugar, salt, pepper, dried basil, Italian Seasoning, fennel seeds, and red pepper flakes. Mix well and adjust the heat to low. Simmer for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours until the water has reduced, skimming the fat and stirring often. Adjust the seasoning according to taste.
