1 large egg
1 lb lean ground beef
1 lb sweet Italian sausage
1 lb lasagna noodles
5 cloves garlic minced
1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
2 (6 oz.) cans tomato paste
1 large white onion diced
1/2 c. white wine
2 tbsp white sugar
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp ground oregano
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley
30 oz. ricotta cheese
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 lb thinly sliced mozzarella cheese about 24 slices
1 c. freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 c. chopped fresh basil
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
How to make The Most Amazing Lasagna
Step 1: Add the ground sausage and ground beef to a large pot. Cook over medium heat, breaking the meat into small chunks using a spoon. Then, add the onion and garlic. Continue to cook, stirring until the meat is well browned. Now, stir in the sugar along with the fresh basil, fennel, oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper, and 1/4 cup chopped parsley. Next, pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and wine. Mix well and bring everything to a simmer. Adjust the heat to low and continue to simmer for 1 to 4 hours, stirring often.
Step 2: In the meantime, lay the lasagna noodles on the bottom of a pan. Directly over the noodles, pour the hot tap water, ensuring to keep the pasta entirely submerged in the water. Allow the noodles to soak in the water for about 30 minutes. Drain, then discard the water.
Step 3: Place the ricotta cheese, egg, the rest of the 2 tbsp parsley, 1/2 tsp salt, and nutmeg in a mixing bowl. Mix well until blended, then pop in the fridge.
Step 4: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 375 degrees. Ready a deep 9 x 13-inch pan. Lightly grease and set aside.
Step 5: When ready to assemble, start by spreading a cup of meat sauce in the bottom of the prepared pan. Top with 4 noodles and spread 1/3 ricotta mixture over, then add the slices of mozzarella cheese on top. Over the cheese, spoon 1 1/2 c. meat sauce and sprinkle with 1/4 c. Parmesan cheese. Do the same layers twice more to make three layers. For the final layers, add the pasta, top with 1 more c. meat sauce to completely cover the pasta. Sprinkle the rest of the cheeses on top.
Step 6: Loosely tent the lasagna with aluminium foil. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake for another 25 minutes to let the cheese brown.
Step 7: Remove from the oven when done and serve the lasagna hot. Enjoy!
