1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 large yellow onion, minced
1/3 green bell pepper, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/3 c. water
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2/3 c. ketchup
3/4 teaspoon chilli powder
1 tablespoon brown sugar (or less)
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
dash of hot sauce (optional)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
How to make The Best Homemade Sloppy Joes
Step 1: In a large skillet, add butter and oil. Heat over medium to medium-high heat. Once the butter has melted, add the beef to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. When done, place the browned beef in a colander to drain.
Step 2: To the same skillet, add the onion and bell pepper. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes until tender. Then, add the garlic and continue to cook for another 30 seconds until aromatic.
Step 3: Return the beef to the skillet followed by the tomato paste, then stir well.
Step 4: To the pan, add the ketchup along with the water, brown sugar, mustard, chilli powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Stir until everything is incorporated.
Step 5: Cook further until the mixture has thickened to your preference. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 6: When done, remove from the heat and serve the homemade sloppy joes right away over toasted buns. Enjoy!
