Cabbage is one of my favourite vegetables. It’s a very underrated veggie, but it is so nutritious. Cabbage is high in beta-carotene, vitamin C, and fibre. Also, cabbage reduces the risks of cancer. I have quite a long list of cabbage recipes. My kids now love cabbage because of these amazing recipes. And my all-time favourite cabbage recipe is this Southern-fried cabbage. It’s crazy delicious, easy, and quick to make. The ingredients needed are only a few. Not to mention, this has bacon! Who doesn’t love bacon, right?
If you are looking for another side dish, this fried cabbage is a must and for keeps! It pairs so well with just about anything, and you can throw this together all year round.
Ingredients
8 slices thick-cut bacon diced
1 large head of cabbage roughly chopped
1 yellow onion (I like to use Vidalia) diced
salt and black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons butter optional
How to make Southern Fried Cabbage
Step 1: To a large saute pan, add the diced bacon and cook on medium heat until crispy. You don’t need to drain the grease.
Step 2: To the pan, add the onions and continue to cook for additional 5 minutes until the onions have softened and browned.
Step 3: Now, add the cabbage to the pan (add half at a time, if needed). Stir the cabbage well with the bacon and onions. Cook further until the cabbage has softened.
Step 4: For even more flavour, you can add a few tbsp more butter to the pan and stir until incorporated. To taste, season with salt and black pepper.
Step 5: Remove from the heat and serve the fried cabbage right away. Enjoy!
Note:
If desired, you can also add a splash of apple cider vinegar or fresh garlic to this fried cabbage.
