Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

by Rebecca July 19, 2021

Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 20 mins | Serves: 5

I grew up to these buttery Southern Buttermilk Biscuits. My grandma made this countless times. I do, too. And before I left for boarding school my mom taught me how to make these biscuits. It’s one of my favourite recipes as it is incredibly easy and quick to throw together using only five ingredients.

This is the best biscuit ever! I serve this with my favourite jam or alongside a hearty soup to soak up all the flavour. Baking in a cast-iron skillet gives these biscuits a wonderful, golden, and crispy yet tender bottom and edge. And the buttermilk gives these a nice rise and guaranteed moist and flavorful biscuits. I shared this simple biscuit recipe with most of my friends, and I received nothing but praise!

These delicious Southern Buttermilk Biscuits will always be a part of who I am. I have been enjoying these ever since I can remember! The old-time biscuit flavour tastes superb with an impressive fluffy and soft texture.

Ingredients

3 cups self-rising flour

1/2 cup lard

Pinch sugar

3/4 cup buttermilk, or more

2 tablespoons melted butter

How to make Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

Step 1: Into the flour, cut the lard using a pastry blender or two forks. Add a pinch of sugar followed by enough buttermilk until you have a soft dough. Knead the batter until smooth, making sure not to over-knead as it will make a tough biscuit dough.

Step 2: Pinch off a little dough using your floured hands and roll it into a ball. In a greased iron skillet or pan, lightly flatten the ball. Repeat until the dough has been used up.

Step 3: Place in 425 degrees preheated oven and bake for about 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven when done and brush with melted butter.
