INGREDIENTS
1 pound dry split peas, rinsed and drained
1 meaty ham bone OR 2 c. ham, diced
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 carrots, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper, to taste
6-8 c. chicken stock or water
HOW TO MAKE SLOW COOKER SPLIT PEA SOUP
Step 1: In a 5-quart or large slow cooker, add all the ingredients (dry split peas, ham bone, onions, garlic, carrots, celery, salt and pepper, and chicken stock).
Step 2: Cover the slow cooker, set it on low, and cook for 8 to 10 hours. Or on high for 4 to 5 hours until the peas are tender.
Step 3: If you decide to use a ham bone, remove it from the slow cooker and shred the ham into bite-sized pieces. Discard the bone and add back the meat to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
Step 4: As needed, season with more salt and pepper.
Step 5: Before serving, remove the bay leaf.
