1 1/2 pounds chicken breast fillets cut into bite-size pieces
1/4 c. cornstarch
3 – 4 tbsp canola or vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic finely minced
1/4 c. low sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tsp sesame oil
1/4 c. honey
1 – 1 1/2 tbsp chilli sauce (sambal oelek)
2 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 c. cold water
2 tbsp sesame seeds
4 green onions trimmed and sliced into one-inch pieces
HOW TO MAKE SESAME CHICKEN
Step 1: Place the pieces of chicken and 1/4 cup cornstarch in a large Ziploc bag. Shake to coat the chicken.
Step 2: Add 2 tbsp canola oil in a preheated large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chicken to the hot oil and fry in batches, flipping once to brown both sides. When done, transfer the chicken pieces to a plate. Fry the rest, adding more oil to the pan as needed.
Step 3: Heat 1 tbsp canola oil in a small saucepan. Add the garlic once the oil is hot and cook until aromatic. Then, add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey, and chilli sauce. To a small bowl, stir 2 tbsp cornstarch with water and whisk this into the pan. Continue to cook until slightly thickened.
Step 4: Wipe clean the pan you used to cook the chicken. Adjust the heat to medium-high. Toast the sesame seeds for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often until lightly browned. To a bowl, transfer the toasted sesame seeds.
Step 5: To the skillet, add the cooked chicken back. Add the sauce and stir, then sprinkle with scallions and toasted sesame seeds. Serve the sesame chicken right away over rice or Chinese noodles. Enjoy!
NOTES:
If you want more sauce. Just double the sauce ingredients.
For best results, serve this dish immediately. If in case you need to serve it at a later time, make sure to separate the chicken and sauce.
Add 1 to 2 tbsp water at a time to the sauce if it thickened until you reached your desired thickness.
Please do not skip toasting the sesame seeds. I promise it is worth it!
If desired, use chicken breasts instead of chicken thighs.
