How to make Paula Deen’s Green Bean Casserole
Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 350 degrees F.
Step 2: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, saute the onions and mushrooms for approximately 5 minutes until soft.
Step 3: To the onions and mushrooms, add the fresh garlic and continue to cook for another minute. When done, remove from the heat.
Step 4: In a large pot, boil the chicken broth, then add the green beans. Cook the green beans for approximately 10 minutes. Drain when done.
Step 5: Place the onions, mushrooms, garlic, green beans, mushroom soup, and French-fried onions in a large bowl. Mix well until combined. Season with salt and pepper depending on your taste. Then, into a 1 1/2 quart baking dish, pour the mixture. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, uncovered.
Step 6: Remove from the oven after 20 minutes and top with grated cheese. Return to the oven and resume baking for 10 minutes more.
Notes:
For onion-lovers, you can add half tsp onion powder.
You can omit the mushrooms if you don’t like them.
If needed, you can use half tsp garlic powder in place of fresh garlic.
To make a homemade version of condensed cream of mushroom soup, you need 2 cups of frozen green beans (thawed and patted dry) and cook in chicken broth. Or if using 14.5 ounces canned green beans, drain, then mix with the rest of the ingredients.
To make this casserole in a Crock-Pot, first, you need to cook, then drain the green beans. As instructed, assemble the casserole but leave the French Fried Onions out. Set to cook on low for 5 hours. After the said time, top the casserole with cheese, then cover until melted. Before serving, top with French Fried Onions. Enjoy!
