by Rebecca March 2, 2022

This patty melts with secret sauce is a dinner menu staple at home with layers of ground beef, caramelized onions, melty cheese, and a tangy secret sauce. This is comfort food at its finest! A seriously indulging meal perfect for everybody!

Ingredients

8 tbsp unsalted butter

1 1/2 lbs ground beef

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 c. secret sauce

6 slices cheddar cheese

1 tsp kosher salt

3 medium Vidalia onions, thinly sliced

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

12 slices sourdough bread

Secret Sauce:

1 tbsp barbecue sauce

1/4 c. Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp hot sauce

1/4 c. mayonnaise

Mix the mustard, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce in a small bowl until blended. Cover and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

How to make Patty Melts With Secret Sauce

Step 1: Add the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix well until just combined, then form into 6 oval patties.

Step 2: Melt 2 tbsp butter in a medium cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the onion to the skillet and cook for about 35 minutes, stirring often, until the onion is tender and caramelized.

Step 3: Cook the patties in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. When done, set the patties aside and wipe the skillet clean.

Step 4: Spread 1 tbsp of the secret sauce in a slice of bread and top with 2 to 3 tbsp caramelized onions, 1 cheese slice, 1 patty, and 1 tbsp more of the secret sauce. Place another slice of bread on top. Do the same with the rest of the bread slices, secret sauce, caramelized onions, cheese, and patties.

Step 5: Melt 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the sandwiches in batches for about 3 minutes per side, flipping once until heated through and golden brown. As needed, add more butter to the skillet.
