Patty Melts

by Rebecca September 9, 2021

PREP TIME: 10 MINS | COOK TIME: 25 MINS | TOTAL TIME: 35 MINS | YIELDS: 4 servings

This is a heavenly dish, a classic cross between grilled cheese and a burger. A beautiful creation, crazy delicious, and your best dinner choice! For this recipe, you are welcome to use any type of bread, but I prefer rye which is a classic choice. The main star of this luscious patty melts is the cooked, golden brown onions. This patty melts is absolutely to die for!

Ingredients

1 stick butter

1 whole large onion, halved and sliced

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

salt and pepper, to taste

5 dashes Worcestershire sauce

8 slices Swiss cheese

8 slices rye bread

How to make Patty Melts

Step 1: Melt 2 tbsp butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Once the butter has melted, add the onions to the skillet and slowly cook for about 20 to 25 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are soft and golden brown.

Step 2: Place the ground beef, salt & pepper, and Worcestershire in a medium bowl. Mix well until just combined, then shape the mixture into 4 patties.

Step 3: In another skillet, melt another 2 tbsp butter over medium heat. Place the patties on the melted butter and cook on both sides until done in the middle.

Step 4: To assemble: On a slice of bread, put a slice of cheese followed by the hamburger patty, 1/4 of the cooked onions, then top with another slice of cheese and finally with the other half of the sliced bread.

Step 5: Melt 2 tbsp butter on a clean griddle or skillet. Once the butter has melted, add the sandwiches to the griddle or skillet and grill over medium heat until golden brown. Take the sandwiches off the griddle/skillet and add additional 2 tbsp butter to the skillet. Return the sandwiches to the skillet and continue to grill the other side until brown, crisp, and the cheese has melted.

Step 6: To serve, slice the sandwiches in half and serve right away! Enjoy!
