Meatballs:
Canola Oil for frying – enough to cover the bottom of a large, deep skillet with ¼ – ½” of oil (about 1½ c.)
1 lb Ground Beef (we used ground round don’t use anything too lean; we want some fat for flavour)
1 Egg slightly beaten
½ tsp Garlic Powder
½ tsp Onion Powder
¼ tsp Black Pepper
1 tsp Salt
¼ c. Bread Crumbs plain
Gravy:
3 tbsp Flour
3 tbsp Butter
½ c. Half & Half
2 c. Beef Broth
How to make Meatballs and Gravy
Step 1: In a large bowl, place the ground beef, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, egg, and bread crumbs. Mix everything using your hands until the ingredients are combined. Then, shape the ground beef mixture into rounds, a bit smaller than a golf ball.
Step 2: To a large, deep skillet, add enough oil to cover about ¼ – ½ inch of the pan. Heat over medium-high. Add the meatballs to the skillet once the oil is hot and cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, turning the meatballs a few times until all sides are browned.
Step 3: Transfer the meatballs to a plate or pan when done and loosely tent the plate with a piece of aluminium foil to keep the meatballs warm. Or you put the plate in the microwave or oven.
Step 4: There is no need to wipe or wash the skillet. Just drain all the oil. Add the butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat. Add the flour to the melted butter and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often.
Step 5: Gradually add the beef broth and stir until blended. Then, bring the sauce to a simmer. Once simmering, add the meatballs and adjust the heat to medium-low. Put the lid on and cook the meatballs for about 15 minutes, stirring often.
Step 6: Remove the lid and stir in half-and-half.
Step 7: Adjust the heat to low and replace the lid. Continue to cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until heated through. Adjust the salt according to taste.
Step 8: Remove from the heat when done and serve the meatballs right away with the gravy over egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or on their own. Enjoy!
