Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles

The ultimate comfort food – caramelized cabbage and onions make everyone happy! Cabbage and onions slowly caramelized in butter and tossed in noodles. A mellow and fragrant, simple, yet scrumptious dish that never fails to impress.

A popular Hungarian dish that is most popular in eastern Europe. Every family has their take, some only use cabbage or add only a piece of onion but I love the extra flavour of caramelized onions plus it goes so well with cabbage.

Turn your humble cabbage into a rich, fragrant, mild, yet incredibly delicious dish with only a few simple ingredients. Don’t underestimate the power of butter and onions. They make your dishes superb! Just like this glorious and flavorful Hungarian Cabbage and Noddles! If you have picky eaters, don’t fret because this dish is so good, they’ll find it hard to say no. Add cubed ham or Kielbasa, and you have a full meal that your whole family will surely love and enjoy!

Ingredients

1 tbsp kosher salt

4 c sliced cabbage

1 c sliced onions

4 tbsp butter, canola oil or bacon fat

2 tsp sugar

1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper

3 c cooked noodles

sour cream for serving

How to make Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles

Step 1: Add the sliced cabbage and salt in a large mixing bowl. Squeeze with your hands and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Melt the butter in a deep skillet over medium heat.

Step 3: Saute the onions, cabbage, pepper, and sugar.

Step 4: Adjust the heat to low and continue to simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes or until the cabbage is brown.

Step 5: Add the cooked noodles into the pan and toss to coat.

Step 6: Once done, remove the pan from the heat and serve with cheesecloth drained sour cream.

Note:

For a complete meal, add cubed ham or Kielbasa when frying the cabbage.
