This is the perfect recipe for serving chicken breast. It’s easy and quick to prepare with the most incredible sauce that goes along with any protein such as beef, pork, lamb, prawns or shrimp, and tofu!
Ingredients
500 grams/1 pound chicken breast, boneless and skinless (2 pieces)
Salt and pepper
1/4 c. (60 grams) flour
3.5 tablespoons (50 grams) unsalted butter (or 2 1/2 tablespoons olive oil)
2 garlic cloves, minced
1.5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (or white or other clear vinegar)
1 tablespoon soy sauce, light or all-purpose
1/3 c. (90 grams) honey (or maple syrup)
How to make Honey Garlic Chicken Breast
Step 1: Make a total of 4 steaks. Slice the breasts in half horizontally. And sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper.
Step 2: In a shallow dish, place the flour. Add the chicken and coat, shaking the excess flour off.
Step 3: In a large skillet, melt most of the butter (reserving a tsp butter for later) over high heat.
Step 4: In the skillet, cook the chicken for about 2 to 3 minutes until golden. Flip and cook the other side for another minute.
Step 5: Adjust the heat to slightly medium-high.
Step 6: Making a slight room in the pan, cook the garlic and top with a dab of the reserved butter. Once the butter has melted, briefly saute the garlic.
Step 7: Add in the vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Stir or carefully shake the pan to mix. Let the sauce simmer for about a minute until a bit thickened.
Step 8: Toss the chicken into the sauce to coat. Add a bit of water to the sauce if it gets too thick, then stir.
Step 9: Immediately remove from the heat. On plates, serve the chicken and drizzle with the rest of the sauce. Enjoy!
Notes:
For a gluten-free version, use cornflour or cornstarch instead.
For this recipe, a light or all-purpose soy sauce is appropriate. Don’t use Dark Soy Sauce as its flavour will dominate the whole dish.
You can use either chops, steaks, cutlets, or any protein that is suited for searing. Do the same cooking steps just adjust the cooking time and remember to add the garlic and the rest of the sauce ingredients before the meat is completely cooked. This way the meat cooks as the sauce is reduced down into a syrupy consistency.
If using tofu, use firm tofu, cut to about 0.75cm or 1/4-inch thick steaks. Pat them dry, spray or rub with oil, and season with salt and pepper. Now, lightly coat the tofu with flour, and using oil, coat the base of the skillet. Heat over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu and cook each side for about a minute until crispy. On paper towels, transfer the tofu. In the meantime, prepare the sauce in a skillet or small saucepan with 2 tbsp or 30 grams butter, following the recipe from step 5. Enjoy with crispy tofu!
Use a large variety of prawns or shrimp. If using frozen prawns or shrimp, thaw them first, then drain well, and pat dry. With flour, lightly coat the prawns and sear for about a minute on one side. Flip and sear the other side for another 30 seconds. Proceed to step 5.
If using fish, prepare as per the recipe for chicken breast. The sauce is perfect for economical fish because of its strong flavour.
