by Rebecca July 3, 2021

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 30 mins | Total Time: 40 mins | Servings: 4

This is classic comfort food with seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savoury mushroom sauce. The perfect easy, quick, and satisfying meal option served on a bed of mashed potatoes with your favourite greens on the side!

INGREDIENTS

Steaks:

1 tbsp olive oil

1 1/4 lbs ground beef (I used 90% lean)

1/3 c. breadcrumbs

2 tbsp onion finely minced

1 tsp Italian seasoning

1 tbsp ketchup

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 Egg

1 tsp minced garlic

3/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

Gravy:

3 tbsp butter

8 oz. sliced mushrooms I used cremini

1/2 c. onion chopped

1 tsp garlic minced

3 tbsp flour

1 1/2 cups beef broth

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp low sodium soy sauce

1 tbsp chopped parsley

salt and pepper to taste

How to make Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Steaks:

Step 1: In a large pan, heat the olive oil over high heat. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix the steak ingredients. Stir until well combined, then form the meat mixture into equal-sized oval-shaped patties.

Step 2: Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the pan and sear both sides for about 4 to 5 minutes until brown. Take the steaks from the pan and tent with foil to keep them warm.

To make the gravy:

Step 3: In the same pan, melt the butter. Add the mushrooms and onions to the pan once the butter has melted and season with salt and pepper.

Step 4: For about 5 to 6 minutes, cook the mushrooms and onions until tender and brown. Then, add in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

Step 6: To the pan, add the flour and continue to cook for a minute more while stirring regularly.

Step 7: Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking until smooth. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook further until thickened. This takes an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Add in the Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce, then stir.

Step 8: Return the hamburger steak to the pan and toss to coat. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes more until the heated through. Before serving, garnish with parsley. Enjoy!
