2 pounds of ground beef
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 c. hash browns, frozen
1/2 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 c. milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 c. sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 green onion, finely chopped
salt and pepper, to taste
How to make Hamburger Hash Brown Casserole
Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Heat the oil in a large (oven-proof) skillet over medium-high heat. Then, add the hash browns and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, undisturbed, until the bottom is crispy and golden brown. To a plate, transfer the hash browns when done and set aside.
Step 3: In the now-empty skillet, add the ground beef and onions. Season with salt and pepper, then cook until the beef is completely cooked and browned. When done, drain the excess grease. To the ground beef mixture, add the milk and mushrooms. Stir well, scraping any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Let the mixture come to a boil.
Step 4: Adjust the heat to medium-low, then stir in the spices. Take the pan off the heat. You can add extra flour if the mixture is still too runny.
Step 5: Transfer the mixture to a 2-quart casserole dish if using a non-oven-safe skillet. If using an oven-proof skillet, finish assembling the casserole in the same skillet.
Step 6: On top of the ground beef mixture, sprinkle 1½ cups of shredded cheese (set aside the rest for later). On top, place the hash browns, browned side up, and sprinkle with the rest of the cheese.
Step7: Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 18 to 20 minutes or until the casserole is piping hot. Take the casserole out of the oven when done and let it cool for about 15 minutes.
Step 8: Serve the casserole garnished with some chopped green onions. Enjoy!
