How to make Granny’s Classic Meatloaf
Step 1: Prepare the oven or grill. Preheat it to 350 degrees F.
Step 2: Use parchment paper to line a baking sheet for easy clean-up.
Step 3: In a saute pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Saute the onions for about 3 to 5 minutes, occasionally stirring until aromatic and a bit brown.
Step 4: Adjust the heat to low and saute the garlic for another 2 to 3 minutes. When done, remove from the heat and allow to cool.
Step 5: Combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt in a large bowl. Add this to the sauteed onions and garlic. Mix well with your hands but don’t overmix. Transfer the mixture on a parchment-lined baking sheet and shape it into a loaf. Slice a criss-cross pattern on top with a sharp knife.
Step 6: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for about 40 minutes, uncovered.
Step 7: Meanwhile, mix the ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar in a bowl.
Step 8: Remove the meatloaf from the oven after 40 minutes and spread the ketchup mixture on top. And bake for 30 to 35 minutes more until the internal temperature of the meatloaf reached 160 degrees F or 70 degrees C.
Notes:
Mix the meatloaf until just combined.
You can double the recipe for the ketchup topping if desired.
Consider making the meatloaf flat to get that crunchy outer layer and to reduce the cooking time.
To check that the meatloaf is done, make sure to use a trusted meat thermometer.
