These easy Tea Cakes are one of my Grandma’s favourite. She makes this whenever we visit and this will always remind me of home. Soft and delicious tea cakes that are best after a day or two.

A pretty simple tea cake that you can dress up for special occasions by adding a bit of food colouring. Also, feel free to change the flavours by switching almond or lemon extract with vanilla.

Ingredients

1 c. butter

1 ¾ c. white sugar

2 Eggs

3 c. all-purpose flour

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp vanilla extract

How to make Grandma’s Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

Step 1: Cream the butter and sugar in a medium bowl until smooth. A piece at a time beat in the eggs. Stir in the vanilla.

Step 2: Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Stir this into the creamed mixture.

Step 3: On a floured surface, knead the dough a couple of times until smooth. Place the dough in the fridge, covered until firm.

Step 4: In the meantime, prepare the oven. Preheat it to 325 degrees F or 165 degrees C.

Step 5: Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Using cookie cutters, slice the dough into your desired shapes.

Step 6: Onto the cookie sheets, transfer the cookies leaving 1 1/2 inches apart.

Step 7: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for about 8 to 10 minutes.

Step 8: Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool for at least 5 minutes on the baking sheet before shifting to a wire rack to cool completely.
