Grandma’s Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

by Rebecca August 10, 2021

Prep time: 45 mins | Cook time: 8 mins | Total time: 53 mins | Servings: 24 | Yield: 2 dozen

These crisp teacakes and soft, chewy inside are always a hit at home. Easily change up the flavour by swapping the almond or lemon extract for the vanilla. And feel free to dress these already amazing teacakes with a few drops of food colouring to fit any occasion!

I like this recipe so much. I think it is a fantastic recipe and sure to keep. You can make different shapes which the kids enjoy so much. Flavour and dress them up depending on your mood. And if you love nutmeg, simply stick to the original recipe.

Ingredients

1 c. butter

1 ¾ c. white sugar

2 Eggs

3 c. all-purpose flour

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp vanilla extract

How to make Grandma’s Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

Step 1: Cream the butter and sugar in a medium bowl until smooth. Add the eggs a piece at a time, beating every after each addition. Add the vanilla and stir.

Step 2: Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Stir this into the creamed mixture.

Step 3: On a floured board, knead the dough for a couple of turns until smooth. Cover the dough and place it in the fridge until firm.

Step 4: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 325 degrees F or 165 degrees C.

Step 5: Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Then, cut the dough into your preferred shapes using cookie cutters. Onto the cookie sheets, place the cookies at least 1 1/2 inches apart.

Step 6: Place the cookie sheets in the preheated oven and bake the cookie dough for about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven when done and let the teacakes cool for at least 5 minutes on the baking sheet. Then, transfer the teacakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
