Grandma’s Ground Beef Casserole

Prep time: 20 mins | Cook time: 55 mins | Total time: 1 hr 15 mins | Servings: 6

I love how this recipe is so easy to make using only a few simple, readily available ingredients. This ground beef casserole recipe has been with my family for decades. I learned to make this casserole from my mom, and I have been making this again and again. It’s my family’s favourite rotation!

Ingredients

1 (8 oz.) package egg noodles

1 lb ground beef

1 tsp white sugar

2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce

1 (3 oz.) package cream cheese

1 c. sour cream

1 large white onion, diced

½ c. shredded sharp Cheddar cheese or more to taste

1 tsp salt

1 tsp garlic salt

How to make Grandma’s Ground Beef Casserole

Step 1: Cook the beef in a hot large skillet over medium-high heat for about 5 to 7 minutes, breaking the meat apart as it cooks until browned. When done, drain the excess grease.

Step 2: Into the ground beef, add the sugar, salt, garlic salt, and tomato sauce. Mix well and simmer for about 20 minutes until well blended. Take the skillet off the heat and cover the skillet. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature.

Step 3: Cook the egg noodles in a large pot with lightly salted boiling water for about 5 minutes until cooked but firm to the bite. Drain when done and let the noodles cool for a little.

Step 4: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 350 degrees F or 175 degrees C.

Step 5: In a bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, and onion.

Step 6: Into a grease 9 x 13-inch casserole dish, scoop half of the noodles and top with half of the sour cream mixture. Over the sour cream mixture, spoon half of the ground beef. Repeat another layer with the rest of the ingredients. Lastly, top the casserole with cheddar cheese.

Step 7: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes or until the cheddar cheese has browned.
