Grandma Baked Macaroni and Cheese Casserole

by Rebecca May 18, 2021

Prep time: 15 mins | Cook time: 25 mins | Serves: 4 to 6 (depending on serving size)

This casserole is beyond delicious! My Grandma’s favourite Baked Macaroni and Cheese casserole recipe. Incredibly easy to throw together with simple ingredients that you can find in your pantry. This casserole received millions of amazing reviews, no wonder this climbed up the ladder pretty quickly! A 5-star family-approved meal that is perfect for sharing, for everybody, and every occasion.

Ingredients

1 cup elbow macaroni cooked according to package directions

1 1/2 cup white sauce (recipe to follow)

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

buttered crumbs

WHITE SAUCE:

3 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups whole milk

salt and pepper to taste (for colour, I also used about 1/4 teaspoons paprika)

BUTTERED CRUMBS:

1 sleeve round buttery crackers, crushed (like a townhouse)

3 tablespoons melted butter

How to make Grandma Baked Macaroni and Cheese Casserole

Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 375 degrees.

Step 2: Using cooking spray, grease a 2.75-quart Pyrex baking dish. Alternately, you can lightly brush the baking dish with butter, then set it aside.

Step 3: According to package directions, cook a cup of macaroni. Drain well when done and set aside.

Step 4: Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan. Be very careful not to scorch the butter. Stir in the flour, then gradually pour in the milk followed by salt and pepper. Cook while constantly stirring over medium heat until the mixture has thickened. Take away from the heat, then add in the cheese. Stir well to melt the cheese. Now, add in the cooked macaroni and fold it into the cheese sauce. Into the prepared baking dish, pour the macaroni mixture.

Step 5: Mix the crushed crackers with butter, then sprinkle this on top of the casserole. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, uncovered, until bubbly and the crumbs are golden.
