Forget Onion Rings, These Onion Patties Are Going To ROCK YOUR WORLD!

by Rebecca April 9, 2022

These onion rings are the best onion rings you’ll ever make! Throw these onion rings together using a few simple ingredients and rock everyone’s world with these over-the-top onion patties. I highly recommend adding some cooked, crumbled bacon to the batter before cooking. Anything with bacon is love! Other great add-ins are 1/4 c. green pepper, or 1/4 c. Cooked mushrooms. Once cooked, you can also sprinkle cheddar cheese over the onion rings.

These onion rings are not your ordinary onion rings. They are patties made with onions and pantry ingredients. Do not be fooled because these onion patties are seriously the best! I love serving these with meatloaf or eating them by themselves. You can even add these onion patties to your burgers with a hamburger, fresh lettuce, and a sliced juicy red tomato.

Ingredients

1 tbsp cornmeal

1 tbsp sugar

2 tsp baking powder

3/4 c. flour

2 tsp salt

3/4 c. milk

shortening or oil for frying

2 1/2 c. chopped onions (about 2 small onions)

How to make Onion Rings?

Step 1: Place the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well, then pour in the milk. Mix again until you have a thick batter.

Step 2: To the batter, add the onions and toss until completely covered.

Step 3: In a skillet, heat half an inch of oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, drop the batter by tablespoons and flatten using the back of a spatula. Cook until all sides are golden brown and crispy.

Step 4: Transfer the onion rings to a paper towel. To taste, sprinkle with salt.

Tip:

I like adding 1/4 c. Crumbled, cooked bacon to the batter. This makes the onion rings crave-worthy. Do this before cooking the batter. You can also add 1/4 c. green pepper, 1/4 c. Cooked mushrooms, or sprinkle the cooked onion rings with cheddar on top.
