How to make Easy Salisbury Steak
Step 1: Dice one onion and sliced the other two into rings.
Step 2: Melt 1 tbsp butter or heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. To one side of the skillet, add the diced onions and the rings to the other side. Saute the onions for approximately 3 minutes, adding more butter if needed until the onions have softened. Alternately, you can saute the onions separately if your pan is not big enough.
Step 3: Set half of the diced onions and rings aside to cool, keeping them separately. Note to use the rings for the onion gravy.
Step 4: To a food processor, add two bread slices and blend them into crumbs.
Step 5: Add the ground beef along with the onions, eggs, seasonings, onions, breadcrumbs to a large bowl. Gently mix, making sure not to overwork the beef. Then, into rounds or oval-shaped patties, form the beef mixture.
Step 6: To the same skillet, add another tbsp of butter or vegetable oil. Add the beef patties to the skillet once the oil is hot and sear for about a minute or two on each side, adding more butter or oil as needed. When done, drain the excess grease off.
Step 7: In a bowl, stir the beef broth and flour until the lumps are gone. Add this to the skillet followed by the heavy whipping cream, Worcestershire sauce, and the remaining butter. Stir and cook over medium-high heat. Then, add the beef patties to the sauce and the rest of the diced/sliced onions.
Step 8: Allow the mixture to boil and cook for about 5 to 15 minutes or until cooked through. To the gravy, add 2 small pinches of onion powder, garlic powder, and crushed red peppers. Stir well. To taste, season with salt and pepper, stirring in between the gravy and patties using a small spoon. When done, take off the heat and serve with mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
TIPS:
Use 80% ground beef (which is equivalent to 20% ground beef) for a flavorful Salisbury steak.
Better than Bouillon base is my go-to in this Salisbury steak recipe and an amazing substitute for the broth. It’s packed with flavour and tastes homemade.
To keep the beef mixture from becoming tough, make sure not to over-mix it.
Sear the meat until no longer grey to achieve a great flavorful brown crust. Ensure to cook it undisturbed.
