Easy Homemade White Gravy Recipe

by Rebecca November 16, 2021

Prep Time: 2 mins | Cook Time: 8 mins | Servings: 4

Easily make this delicious homemade white gravy from scratch with this simple recipe. Grab the three main ingredients and start making this excellent gravy. It pairs well with chicken fried steak, crispy coated chicken breasts, biscuits, or over mashed potato. I’m sure everyone will enjoy another classic for dinner or lunch. Now, it is time to forget the packet mixes and begin creating this homemade winner!

This white gravy is rich, thick, and incredibly creamy with a nice dash of pepper. I love my fried chicken with it. My kids enjoy this as a dipping sauce for toasted ham and cheese sandwiches. No matter, this white gravy is the bomb!

Ingredients

2 tbsp heavy cream

2 tbsp AP flour

1 tsp black pepper

1 ½ c. milk

½ tsp salt

additional salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp butter, or fat from cooking your meat

How to make Easy Homemade White Gravy

Step 1: In a small saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Once the butter has melted, add the flour to the pan and stir. Cook the flour for about 3 to 4 minutes or until well mixed and turned golden brown.

Step 2: Stir 1/4 cup of milk into the pan. At this point, the mixture will become a very thick paste. Slowly stir in 1/4 cup of milk until the mixture has slightly thinned. Now, whisk in the rest of the 1 cup milk. To taste, season with salt and pepper.

Step 3: Bring the mixture to a low simmer and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened and glossy.

Step 4: To the pan, add the heavy cream. As needed, sprinkle with more salt and pepper.

Notes:

Add enough salt depending on the butter used. Make sure to finish the gravy before adjusting the salt and pepper to suit your taste.

This is a very thick gravy so if you want to thin it out, add ¼-1/2 cup more milk.
