Ideal for decorating every dessert, and would make a wonderful holiday gift. These sweet, chewy Candied Orange Slices are easy to prepare but need time to set. But it’s all worth it!
Ingredients
4 small oranges, such as tangelos
8 c (1920 ml) water, divided
4 c (800 grams) granulated sugar, plus more for coating
How to make Candied Orange Slices
Step 1: Place ice water in a large bowl. Fill it and set it aside.
Step 2: To a large saucepan, add 4 cups (960 ml) water. Bring to a boil over high heat before adding in the slices of orange. Let it boil for about 2 minutes, then transfer the slices of orange into the bowl of ice water. Discard the liquid.
Step 3: Add the rest of the 4 cups (960 ml) water and sugar in the same saucepan. Bring this to a boil over medium heat. Occasionally stirring until the sugar has fully dissolved.
Step 4: Adjust the heat to medium-low, then add in the slices of orange. Simmer for about 45 to 60 minutes or until the rinds of the oranges are a bit translucent. Swirl the oranges gently every after 16 minutes so they will be coated evenly with the sugar water.
Step 5: Place the orange slices on a cooling rack set over a large baking sheet. Allow the slices to sit for up to 24 hours or until completely dry.
Step 6: When ready, dip the slices in granulated sugar if wanted. Serve quickly or place in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to a month.
Note:
For a fun edible present, dip the dried oranges in melted chocolate.
