Macaroni and Cheese is a staple at my home. This best-ever version is a must, unlike any other, this here will give so much flair to your usual Mac & Cheese.

16 ounces uncooked large elbow macaroni, large shells, or cavatappi pasta
6 tbsp salted butter
1/3 c grated yellow onion
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
6 tbsp all-purpose flour
3 1/2 c milk
1 3/4 c heavy cream
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 ounces extra-sharp yellow Cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1 c), plus 4 oz. diced (about 1 cup), divided
4 ounces sharp white Cheddar cheese, shredded, (about 1 cup), plus 4 oz. diced (about 1 cup), divided
How to Make the Best-Ever Macaroni and Cheese Recipe
Step 1: Prepare the oven and preheat to 175 degrees C or 350 degrees F.
Step 2: Cook the pasta. Refer to the instructions provided on the package.
Step 3: Place a large saucepan on the stove and turn the heat to medium.
Step 4: Add the butter and allow it to melt.
Step 5: Add the onion, mustard, nutmeg, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook for about 30 seconds.
Step 6: Add the flour. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes or until the colour turns golden brown.
Step 7: Add the cream and milk gradually. Make sure to whisk every addition.
Step 8: Allow the mixture to boil while whisking from time to time.
Step 9: Turn the heat down to medium-low. Make sure to whisk for about 5 minutes until the texture becomes a little thick.
Step 10: Add in the Worcestershire sauce and stir until well mixed.
Step 11: Remove the pan from the heat and add 3/4 cup each of the shredded cheeses. Stir until melted completely.
Step 12: Add the pasta and sliced cheeses. Stir until well combined.
Step 13: Grease a 13×9-inch baking dish.
Step 14: Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Step 15: Place inside the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 16: Remove from the oven and set the oven to broil.
Step 17: Meanwhile, sprinkle the rest of the shredded cheeses on top of the Mac and Cheese.
Step 18: Put it back inside the oven and broil for about 2 minutes or until the cheese has melted completely.
Step 19: Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 15 minutes.
Step 20: Serve and enjoy!
