“Apple Dumpling” Cinnamon Rolls

by Rebecca May 6, 2021

Prep time: 30 mins | Cook time: 1 hr | Serves: 12

They call it apple dumplings but this looks exactly like cinnamon rolls. However, in reality, these are simply pastry wrapped and rolled like a cinnamon roll with a luscious apple filling. Enjoy these as is or topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and sprinkles of walnuts, if desired. You should give this a go, it’s a nice change to your usual dumplings and cinnamon rolls.

Ingredients

SAUCE:

2 cups granulated sugar

2 cups water

1/4 cup margarine or butter

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

DOUGH:

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup shortening

2/3 cup milk

FILLING:

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 cups shredded, peeled granny smith apples (3-4 medium)

How to make “Apple Dumpling” Cinnamon Rolls

Step 1: To make the sauce: Combine 2 cups sugar, water, margarine, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large saucepan. Bring this to a boil for about 5 minutes, then set aside.

Step 2: To make the dough: Add the flour, baking powder, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Mix well. Cut the shortening using a pastry blender until pea-size. In the middle, make a well and add the milk. Mix until just moistened. Then, on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough to 10-12 strokes or until almost smooth. And to 12 x 10-inches rectangle, roll out the dough.

Step 3: To make the filling: Mix 1/4 cup of sugar with half tsp cinnamon and set aside. Over the dough, evenly add the apples and sprinkle with the sugar mixture. Beginning from the long side, roll the dough into a spiral, then pinch the seam to seal. Divide it into twelve 1-inch thick pieces. Over the dumplings, pour the sauce. Place in 350 degrees preheated oven and bake for approximately 50 minutes or until golden brown.

Note:

Feel free to add finely diced peaches or pears to this recipe. When serving, top it off with whipping cream or ice cream and garnish with some walnuts.
