Old-Fashioned Biscuits

by Rebecca November 13, 2020

Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 15 mins | Serves: Makes 10 to 12 biscuits

Warm and wonderful Old-fashioned biscuits that can be a perfect snack or part of a meal. These four-ingredient flaky biscuits are best to serve with apple butter, jams, honey, jellies, or butter, or anything that you prefer, really. A fool-proof recipe to keep. Nothing compares to these delicious biscuits straight from the oven.

A staple of any Southern cooking and my go-to recipe, too. I love to pair it with soup for dinner or a cup of coffee for breakfast. Super easy to throw together even when you are in a hurry.

Ingredients

2 c self-rising flour (for best result use Martha White or White Lily)

1/4 c lard or shortening (about egg-sized and very cold)

1 c very cold buttermilk (adjust accordingly)

3 tbsp melted shortening or butter

How to make Old-Fashioned Biscuits

Step 1: Ready the oven. Preheat it to 450 degrees F.

Step 2: Generously grease a large cast-iron or biscuit pan with cooking spray.

Step 3: Mix the flour and shortening in a large bowl. Make a small well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk. Use your hands or fork to mix well until incorporated and the mixture is light.

Step 4: Knead the dough on a floured surface a few times until about half-inch thick.

Step 5: Use a biscuit cutter to divide the dough into small pieces, place on the prepared skillet or pan, and top with shortening or butter.

Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for about 13 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 7: Once done, take the biscuits out of the oven and onto a sealed container.

Step 8: Let the steam inside for at least 5 minutes.

Step 9: Brush the biscuits with butter and serve with apple butter, jams, honey, jellies, or butter.
