How to make Flaky Apple Pie Bars
Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 350 degrees F or 175 degrees C.
Step 2: Ready a 9 x 13-inch pan. Grease, flour, and set aside.
Step 3: Place the flour, 2 tbsp sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir well. Then, cut in the shortening until you have a mixture that resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4: Whisk the egg yolks with half a cup of milk. Add this into the flour mixture and stir until incorporated.
Step 5: Roll half of the dough on a lightly floured surface to the size of the greased and floured pan. With the rolled dough, cover the inside of the prepared pan, spreading the dough with a light coating of egg white.
Step 6: Fill the dough with the sliced apples. Sprinkle over the sugar and top with cinnamon.
Step 7: Roll the rest of the dough out, then place it on top of the apples. Lightly brush the dough with the egg white.
Step 8: Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 35 to 40 minutes until the crust is golden.
Step 9: Meanwhile, add the confectioners’ sugar, salt, vanilla, and milk in a small bowl. Beat until smooth.
Step 10: Remove the bar from the oven and let it cool. Once cooled, cut the bar into squares and drizzle the icing on top.
